Dear Editor,

Re: “Canada Post workers could strike again. If they do, the public will see red”

Why would the public blame workers, the people they see every day at their door, when it is clearly the incompetence and intransigence of the employer and their silent backers in Government that have bled Canada Post dry for decades and pinned the blame on employees.

The silent direction from Liberal and Conservative governments alike is obvious: they believe delivery should be a private, for-profit, non-unionized enterprise regardless of the needs of Canadians whether they are in downtown Toronto or on the shores of the Arctic Ocean. This silent policy has ‘delivered’ the most lucrative business away from Canada Post and into the arms of American billionaires leaving the corporation unable to fulfill its public mandate to ensure all Canadians across our incredible land can receive correspondence.

Here is my counter proposal to the Government of Canada and Canada Post. Deliveries were at its best when it was by Canadians and for Canadians, exclusively. Mark Carney’s Government should introduce and all Parties should support, legislation that enshrines that all deliveries that touch Canadian soil, are handled by Canada Post.  Canada Post would cement itself as an essential service so that minimum delivery standards were maintained while collective bargaining rights were protected. Not only would this immediately solve the problem of Canada Post’s viability, it would ensure our sovereignty as a nation and security for our working people.

Sincerely,

Chris Alemany

    1. I don’t personally have anything against weekend or evening deliveries provided the workers doing it are properly compensated for providing the privilege, but these are all things that a public corporation could ask the public about and negotiate in good faith with their workers on.
