(The letter was sent to the Alberni Valley News on June 12, 2026)
Dear Editor,
This is a letter to all my driving friends. There is one good thing that is actively saving me money every single day, my electric car. We still have a gas hybrid too, but it is mostly retired. We will never buy another one. I will move heaven and earth to find any fully electric car the government allows me to buy because over the past 6 years since buying ours, the EV is the only thing that has saved us money, and still does every day.
People are right to be angry at the cost of living. All I want is a burger for dinner with family and all I get is three grey patties worth from the local grocery chain for $7.99 and I’m supposed to think I got a deal.
But here’s an actual deal: There are a lot of used electric cars for sale now under $20,000, even under $10,000. A family member bought one for $5000. It only has 100km range on the old battery but they drive it daily around Victoria to school and work. It has already saved them hundreds of dollars in gas! We bought our EV new in 2019. Now it has 270,000km on it and we’ve camped across Canada and back. It costs the same to “fill” whether there is a war with Iran or not.
So between friends, I’m telling you, if you want to save money, do everything you can to get yourself a fully electric vehicle. Car, pickup truck, SUV — it could be a bike or a scooter too! — long range, or town runabout, whatever you need; electric vehicles are the only thing making people’s lives more affordable right now.
Sincerely,
Chris
