Last week we lost, most suddenly, Ellen Frood. I had the pleasure and honour to work with Ellen from 2018 to 2024 on the Board of Sage Haven (formerly ACAWS), a service provider for people fleeing domestic violence in Port Alberni. The only picture of the two of us together that I can find is the opening of the 2nd stage housing project in Port Alberni. She is in the middle between MLA Osborne who is holding the sisters and myself in the hat. She made that project happen.
This is a letter sent in her memory to the AV News.
Dear Editor,
Ellen Frood was a wonderful person, friend and mentor for me and many, many others. She truly believed in Port Alberni’s heart and made that heart real for so many disadvantaged people in our community. She upheld the highest integrity and inspired all around her to follow her lead. She was a doer. She was a feminist and a fearless advocate for women and people of all identities fleeing domestic violence. She was also joyful and funny.
She believed in the power of hugs.
My deepest condolences to her husband, family, and to the whole community as we mourn her loss.
Chris Alemany
Former Board member and Chair – Sage Haven Society
