This is the number one issue of our time.
Too often politicians will make decisions based on what will get them elected next time, rather than what is good for the City and the community and world over the long term. The decisions I make will continue to be through the lens of the fact that climate change is upon us and we must do what we can to both mitigate it and adapt to it.
Food Security and Climate Disruption Committee
This committee was a key success of the past four years. In that time, we created 3 annual reports encompassing 27 recommendations for Council on everything from Active Transportation to Water bottle filling stations and adopting the Right to a Healthy Environment.
You can see the three reports here: 2015, 2016, and 2017.
The committee is currently working on how it might transition with new members and a new Council. It is imperative that this committee continue to lend an environmental, climate and food security lens to the business of the City.
Last election I wanted to encourage residents to switch to efficient electric heating (while also showing how to reduce Hydro bills!).  Through the FSCD Committee we have achieved this with rebates for upgrading to heat pumps.  Check out the Oil to Heat Pump program which is now expanded to replacing wood stoves! Create a tax break or grant for big home efficiency upgrades (PassivHaus).
Last election I wanted to pursue more renewable energy partnerships and projects. We are now exploring installation of Solar Panels on City buildings and in time we might be able to offer volume buying for residents to be able to put solar panels on their roofs.
There is more to be done and more to be added to these pages. Stay tuned! 🙂
