Some good news from Iraq.
The fabled Iraqi Marshlands are returning.
These are the places where many say the Garden of Eden and Great Flood are set. The Marshs were almost completely destroyed by damning, diking, irrigation and deliberate draining by Saddam Hussein when the Marsh Arabs revolted against him after the Gulf War.
Since Husseins’ departure, many dams have been destroyed and lands have been reflooded. New Scientist is now reporting that almost 30% of the Marshes have been restored and thousands of birds and otters are returning to the Marshes.
There is much work to be done before we can ensure that as much of the Marsh is saved and restored as possible but this is certainly an encouraging start.
